Headteacher's Update 27 June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers
At this time of year in Hope Valley College, we work alongside our partner primary schools to ensure that the transition to secondary school is as positive and stress free as possible for Year 6 students who become Year 7s in the autumn. We welcome new starters into school next week to meet their new classmates and teachers. Many young people come to our transition day already knowing their way around the school, thanks to the many primary sports events and STEM activities run by our staff and supported by our local primary schools. We will talk to new students about the 'Hope Valley College Way' and about how we will help them to be the best they can be during their time with us.
At the other end of the journey, we say goodbye to our Year 11s, who have officially left Hope Valley College and are celebrating at their Prom on Monday. The expectations that the GCSE exam system places on students are very high and we were so proud of how our Year 11 cohort rose to the occasion and maintained such high standards throughout the exam season. We are all glad that the exams are over and wish them every success in the future. We also say goodbye today to our Hope Valley Pathways leavers and wish them all the best with their future plans.
We enjoyed non-uniform day today, raising money for diversity charities and the Cystic Fibrosis trust. Thank you for all your donations. We will share the total raised with you in due course.
Meanwhile, we are looking forward to a day of sunshine and good tunes at our annual Music and Mayhem showcase. This event showcases the amazing talents of our Hope Valley College musicians and our wonderful PTFA. We hope to see you there!
What’s going on in school:
- Last week, we welcomed over 80 Year 5 children to HVC to spend the day with us and take part in some STEM activities. Sessions included bread baking, boat making, Kandinsky inspired stained glass art, computing and some fantastic science experiments. This is a great opportunity for children from our local primary schools to get a feel for the secondary school environment in advance of joining us in Year 7. Thank you to our Design Mentors who supported some of the activities.
- This term, Outdoor Activities for our Year 9 students have focused on climbing, with the final session taking place today. The students have done well, and even if they've been a bit nervous have given it a go. Our staff and volunteers have been supportive helping to check and encourage students between climbs. Well done to all students, volunteers and thanks again to our supporters, 'Outside' outdoor shop in Hathersage, Longshaw Estate and the Bike Garage in Bamford, who have all helped to facilitate our Outdoor Activities sessions over the course of the year. We are very grateful for their support.
Group changes for 2025/26
We are in the process of putting together classes for next year. All classes in Year 7 and 8 will change for the start of the new academic year. We will take into account friendship groups and be sensitive to individual needs. In Year 9, we are going to make changes to LoseHill and Winhill tutor groups for the start of Year 10.
Car Park
A reminder that there is a 5mph speed limit in the main car park. Students in Hope Valley Pathways frequently cross the car park to access main school during the school day and we need to ensure they are safe, so we ask you to be mindful when driving in and out. If you are using the car park to drop off or collect students, please ensure you park in one of the parking bays, rather than waiting by the pedestrian crossing or outside Hope Valley Pathways. Thank you.
Job Vacancies
We are recruiting for a Temporary Learning Mentor to join us at Hope Valley Pathways from September for one academic year, as well as a receptionist in main school. For more information, please see our website: Hope Valley College - Vacancies
