Headteacher's Update 13th February 2026

Dear Parents and Carers
This has very definitely felt more like a winter term than a spring one. But yet again, your young people have taken part in so much and have impressed a wide range of visitors in school. Yesterday, colleagues from Chorus Trust came to visit and they were incredibly impressed by our students. Our guest speaker form the Holocaust Education Trust Tim Mulroy also commented on how polite our Year 9 students were. It is always really nice to hear this from visitors as we know that our students are our best ambassadors.
Next term will be equally as busy, especially for Year 11s who are fully into their revision and preparation for their upcoming GCSE Exams.
I hope you all have a restful half term, and we look forward to welcoming students back to school on Tuesday 24 February.
What’s going on in school?
- Our Easter Showcase music and drama extravaganza is taking place on Wednesday 25 March. Please put this date in your diaries. More information will follow soon, including ticket sales.
- Students have been taking part in the Duolingo streak competition for MFL. Students need to email a photo of their Duolingo stats to Mr Barnes, so that he can update his records. Prizes will be awarded later in the year.
- Well done to Zach in Y9 who was recently awarded the Golden Snorkel Award at the North East Derbyshire Diving Association club awards. This award recognises a junior member who has made a significant contribution to the club over the past year. Zach joined the club in April after taking part in a try-dive session and then qualified as an ocean diver in October, completing his open water training at Capernwray. He plans to try more sea diving in Oban in May.

- Netball Training will resume on the first Wednesday back after half term and priority for team selection will be based on those who attend training. Training runs from 3.30 - 4.30pm. The High Peak Netball tournaments will take place after half term, with Y7 playing at New Mills on Thursday 19 March and Y8 & Y9 playing at Chapel on Thursday 26 March. More information will be shared in due course.
- Huge well done to one of our trainee teachers, Mr Frewer, who is part of the GB U23 deaf football team. He has recently returned from a warm weather training camp in Tenerife, where the focus was on technical fitness ahead of upcoming games against Wales and Turkey. He is currently preparing to represent Great Britain in the U23 Deaf World Cup, which will be held in Serbia in May.

Girl's football will take place on the field. Shin pads and football boots will be required (we do have some spare football boots to loan out. If anyone has any football boots that they would like to donate, we would be very appreciative. Boys’ hockey will require shin pads and gum shields. We do have a small amount of gum guards available in school for purchase - please contact the school office if you would like to buy one.
Year 8 English – Poetry by Heart
Over half term, Students need learn their Poetry by Heart poem, so that they can perform in the competition in class when we come back to school.
Attendance
Attendance is something that we will keep revisiting. Currently we are approximately 3.5% behind the national figure for attendance, which means our young people are in school less than their peers nationally. It also means we are in the bottom 10% of schools nationally for attendance. We thank you for your on-going support with ensuring that your young people attend school as much as possible and we will continue our work in school to support this.
Y10 Maths Tests – advance warning
Year 10 will be doing a Paper 2 during maths lessons on 6 March.
Year 10 will be doing a Paper 3 during maths lessons on 15 May.
These are both calculator papers, so they need to bring in THEIR calculators.
Y11 Maths Revision
A GCSE Exam-Style Weekly Revision has been set up on Sparx Assessments for all Year 11 students that can be monitored by the class teacher. Students have been told about this in their lessons. To ensure maximum benefit from the full 12-week structured programme, they need to start now. T
Car Parking
A polite reminder that students should be dropped off and collected from the main car park, not the bus bay. If you are using the car park, we would ask you to park in one of the marked bays and switch your engine off whilst waiting, so that lessons in Hope Valley Pathways are not disturbed. Many thanks.
