Our Open Evening for Year 6 students was a great success last night, with over 550 people attending. Staff from all departments spoke to prospective students and their families and showed them what we offer here at HVC. Our student volunteers were fantastic ambassadors for our school, as they showed people around and shared their experiences of our school community. Visitors were treated to a performance by our Y7 choir, enjoyed a selection of food from our catering team and had the opportunity to look around all areas of school and have a go at some activities.

 

What’s going on in school?

• We welcomed students from Frederikssund Realskol (near Copenhagen) to HVC this week. They are buddied up with students in Year 10 and accompanying them to lessons. They also gave presentations on life in a Danish school to our Year 7 students in their language lessons this week. This partnership has been running for over 15 years and is an important event on our school calendar.

• Our Y10 Duke of Edinburgh participants set off on the first day of their final expedition this morning. Thank you to Ms Wain-Hobson and Mr Fitton for all their organisation of this fantastic programme, and to all the volunteers who have given up their time to marshal over the next 2 days. We hope students enjoy their expedition and enjoy a well-earned rest on Sunday. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures in school on Monday.

• This week students in Y11 took part in our Interhouse netball and football competition. Netball training also started this week – this takes place after school on Wednesdays – from 3.30 – 4.30pm – everyone is welcome!

Y7 Information Evening – Thursday 8 October

We look forward to meeting parents and carers of our Year 7 students at our Information Evening on Thursday 8 October from 4.30pm. There will be a presentation in the hall, followed by small group sessions with our Senior Leadership Team. Tutors will also be available to meet with parents/carers and there will be the opportunity to look at some students’ books. More information will be shared next week.

Mobile phones

We will now be fully implementing the government guidance regarding mobile phones on school premises. This means that students are expected to switch their phones off and put them in their bags as soon as they arrive on the school premises.  They are also expected to keep the phones in their bags until their bus leaves.  If there is a delay to a bus, permission may be given for students to use their phones. Any student who is seen with their phone after 3.30pm will be asked to hand their phone in the next day.

We are also reminding parents and carers about some of the challenges with Whatsapp groups and Snapchat groups.  They are problematic as young people are added without permission and have no control over what is posted. We would ask that you support your young person with this.

Car Parking on school site

If you drop off or collect your young person from school at the beginning or end of the school day, please use the main car park next to the Poacher’s Arms. Please make sure you use the marked parking spaces whilst waiting in the car park to ensure access is not blocked. Thank you.
