Principal's update 21 June 2024
Published on 21/06/24
Dear Parents and Carers
Today we held our Careers Event for students in Y9 and Y10. We welcomed representatives from 23 different employers, colleges, sixth forms and universities, who chatted to our students and gave them lots of useful information. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to consider their options beyond HVC. Thank you to all those who took time out of their busy schedules to come to speak to our young people today.
As the weather warms up (finally!) we would like to remind you of uniform expectations. Shorts or skirts may be worn but should be of a suitable length for the school environment. Shorts should be tailored and around knee length. Skirts should also be knee length. Please remind students to bring a water bottle to school – these can be refilled from the water fountains at break and lunchtimes.

What’s going on in school:
- Our Well Dressing for 2024 is finished!! A big thank you to all staff and students involved in the production of our nursery rhyme themed well! And thank you to all of those who have kindly donated flowers and petals.
- Thank you to parents of Bill and Pearl, both in Y8, who generously donated lots of plants to our Gardening Club. Club members have been busy working on the pond renovations and have even spotted a frog in there! We also have recently hatched grey wagtails chicks in one of the flower planters in the quad.
- The Carnegie Reading Group celebrated this week with lunch in the library. Shadowers have been following the judging process for this year’s Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing awards, reading and reviewing the eight shortlisted titles and meeting weekly over the past three months to discuss the books. Over lunch, we held our own vote for our top book and took part in a quiz based on this year’s shortlist, which was won by Gwilym, Tom and Pearl. Group members were each given a choice of book to keep from a selection of titles from past Carnegies, and a certificate commending them on their participation. All have been excellent group members and we are sad to wind up the group until Carnegie 2025 begins in March next year.
The winners were named as follows: -
Shadowers’ Choice Award (chosen by Shadowers across the country): Crossing the Line by Tia Fisher
Our HVC readers’ choice: The Song Walker by Zillah Bethell
The official Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing award: The Boy Lost in the Maze by Joseph Coelho
Y10 mock exams
The Y10 mock exams continue next week with the written assessments. The mock exam timetable can be accessed using the following link Exams - Hope Valley College (hopevalley-chorustrust.org). Please note that the French listening and reading assessment will now be held on Tuesday 2nd July. Students have been handed their statement of entry today which has details of their exam room and seat number.
English revision materials
The English Literature ‘An Inspector Calls‘ revision materials ordered through ParentPay have now arrived in school. Please remind your young person to collect their bundle.
Music & Mayhem
Everyone is welcome to come to our Music & Mayhem event on Saturday 29 June to listen to great music, play fun games and maybe even win a prize for being the fastest inflatable unicorn! We have some offers of help to run the event but could do with a few more to help with setting up and through the day. If you would be willing to help for part of the event please email PTFAhv@hopevalley.chorustrust.org
There will be a BBQ, ice cream and other snacks but we would love to hear from any baker willing to provide some sweet treats for us to sell. If you are willing to make something for the event, please email PTFAhv@hopevalley.chorustrust.org
Free DJ Workshop
Mr Stanley, our peripatetic DJ teacher, is running a short drop in session over lunchtime on Thursday 27 June. Students can have a go at mixing music using the latest DJ equipment. The session is to give students a taste of DJ skills and an opportunity to ask any questions. You can also register interest in weekly lessons at school starting from September 2024.
